Experimental Hometown

“Posters for Darien, AKA a nice place to live. Four “landmarks” in Darien stood out to me: the Old Lace Schoolhouse, the public library, waterfall glen, and the centralized strip malls. In the week after I started the ideation process, I looked for words and graphics I could use to create a set of four posters highlighting these “landmarks.” Once I figured out what I was going to use in these posters I thought that a map of Darien would be an effective way to unite the posters. Darien is divided by one main intersection which would be the center point of the posters.

My first draft of one of these posters was very bulky with big text and thick map lines. In the following week I created 2 of these posters, one with a graphic I created and one with text only. These posters were minimal with thin map lines, no street names, and were focused on smaller studies of text to relay the information on these “landmarks.” While exploring small studies in text I figured that I would abandon all graphics and focus on a text only approach because of how minimal Darien feels to me. I also abandoned the idea of color for this project to remain consistent that minimal and spaced-out feeling.

To expand this project, I decided to design a set of 3 business cards for the mayor, police chief, and fire chief that would highlight the city hall, police station, and fire department. They mimicked the map and marker design of the posters.”
